At Blooming Smiles, we are proud of the beautiful smiles we create for patients throughout Woodland Hills, Northridge, and the surrounding areas. We offer a variety of treatments like braces and Invisalign to increase confidence for those who may dislike the appearance of their smile, or who need treatment for severe orthodontic issues. Drs. Sanjideh and Golian strive to educate our patients on excellent dental health, so we are pleased to provide the following tips on wearing your retainer after orthodontic treatment.
Whether you’ve received braces or Invisalign, wearing a retainer is necessary to preserve the stunning results of your treatment. Your Woodland Hills orthodontist will create your custom retainer after removing your braces, or after you’ve finished wearing your last set of aligners. The retainer will be fitted to your mouth, and you will need to wear it regularly to keep your teeth from shifting back into their previous positions.
Typically, you will need to wear your retainer for at least 12 months following your treatment. Your Northridge family dentistry will likely instruct you to wear it full time for the first 4-6 months, and every night while you sleep after that. It’s important to abide by the guidelines given for wearing your retainer. Otherwise, your treatment may be compromised, or you may experience other complications with your smile.
If you find that your retainer doesn't fit or is too loose or tight, you will need to come see your Northridge orthodontist here at Blooming Smiles for an evaluation. Be sure to let us know as soon as possible of any fitting issues with your retainer, so that we can correct the problem or create a new retainer quickly, in order to best protect your new smile.
